Sandy Springs Officially Launched
The city of Sandy Springs has officially launched.
Its first action, taken at 12:01, was to halt permitting of all strip clubs, massage parlors and other "adult businesses." New mayor Eva Galambos was given an oversized key by supporters.
Gregor Smith of Atlanta Metroblogs noted that the event will cost Fulton County $68 million in annual tax revenue, which just hints at one of the unintended consequences in all this, namely that rich neighborhoods can now become cities and keep their money from going to educate poor kids.
Jason Rizner of PeachPundit, who recently moved to a place in the new city, wrote hoping the city will tackle the issues it promised to tackle, like horrible traffic and neighborhood zoning. Galambos and company now become assessors on some of the most valuable real estate in the region, the Edge City around Perimeter Mall, although the DeKalb County border puts the mall itself outside the new city.
That will be one of the most interesting battles to watch. Will developers continue to get their every wish granted, and what might they do if they don't?
Unintended consequences.
