Actor's Express, a small theatrical company in West Midtown, at the King Plow Center, has decided it will offer what it calls the world premiere of Love Jerry, a musical on the difficult issue of child abuse, starting January 19.

The play is by Megan Gogerty, a UT-Austin graduate. She writes on her Web site, "I like theatre that subverts.  In order to be truly subversive, a play must recognize the force it’s subverting.  It must smile and give the force compliments and then talk bitchily behind its back when the force has left the room."

Love, Jerry has toured southern England and was part of the main stage season at UT  where it earned seven B. Iden Payne Award nominations, and five Austin Critics Table Award nominations, including the David Mark Cohen Award for best new play.

Among the aspects of child abuse this play deals with are pedophilia and incest. This is what has ThePaytons hopping mad:

I'm not sure how someone can see this and not realize the cultural pit we're slipping down into. This is the start of the normalization of pedophilia (and incest; a two-fer). Doesn't matter that it's "delicate" and "heart-wrenching"; the point is that the behavior isn't condemned.

Does he have a point? If we portray child abuse dramatically, rather than merely melodramatically, have we become one with Satan?
