Our Huge Jail Is Too Small

The huge Fulton County jail at Garnett Street is jammed.

The jail was originally built to hold about 2,250 people. Right now it's got about 2,800.

Now an attempt to move some of those inmates to South Georgia has been stopped, in a case that was a reunion for old Atlanta pols.

The judge who refused the transfer was former City Council President (and mayoral candidate) Marvin Arrington. The lawyer who successfully argued against the move was former Decatur mayor Mike Mears.

Sheriff Myron Freeman wanted to move 200 of the accused (and most are still awaiting trial) to Decatur. Decatur County. Decatur County is all the way in the lower left hand corner of Georgia, down by Tallahassee. (It's highlighted in dark blue on the map above.)

He also wanted to move some to Mitchell County, which is closer. About 10 miles closer. (Mitchell is just above Decatur and to the right, above.)

Trouble was, as Mears noted, this would put them hundreds of miles away from their defense attorneys, and these folks are still presumed innocent. Freeman said he could get them back here with "just" five days' notice.

Arrington didn't buy it. Inhale and squeeze in, folks.
