End of the World in 2036

Conservative blogger Argus read a liberal London paper, The Guardian, and concluded the world will end in 2036.

That is when a 390 meter wide asteroid, called Apophis, may hit the Earth with the power of 100,000 Hiroshima bombs. It's a 4 on the 10-point Torino Scale, with 10 being certainty of global catastrophe. The name Apophis comes from an Egyptian God of death and destruction.

We'll know more on April 13, 2029, where if it passes through a tiny piece of space called the keyhole, just 600 meters in size, well, it's coming.

And by then it will be too late. (Yes, too late even for Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck, as much as Argus might want to send Affleck, at least.)

Right now, odds are just 1 in 37 all this will happen, but are you willing to bet the world on that? The Spaceguard Foundation, which spends its time on these sorts of things, says that if we're serious about deflecting Apophis we really need to have our plans set by 2013.
